Fundamental Rights at Risk: Arms Trade, Violence, and Migration in the Mexican Context and Its International Projection

Mexico, renowned for its natural, cultural, and economic wealth, faces a troubling paradox: despite its potential, between 300,000 and 400,000 citizens emigrate annually due to social inequalities, insecurity, and violence. This phenomenon not only affects fundamental rights but also reveals the impact of the arms trade, a multi-billion-dollar industry fueled by its proximity to the United States, the world’s largest arms exporter.
These arms, both legal and illegal, exacerbate violence levels and perpetuate a cycle that forces many Mexicans to seek safety outside their country. This problem is not limited to organized crime but reflects the influence of international economic and political interests that undermine constitutional guarantees and the international human rights treaties ratified by Mexico.
Addressing this crisis requires a comprehensive strategy that respects the principles of conventionality and pro persona, questioning the global economic and political dynamics that perpetuate the problem. Only then can Mexico overcome the barriers imposed by external interests and ensure a future of hope for its population.
