Abstract

The Castilla-La Mancha regional parliament is comprised of 33 deputies, although the regional Statute of Autonomy allows for a range between 25 and 35 members. This article argues and justifies that such a size is inappropriate for the region’s characteristics. To support this claim, a comparison with the other autonomous communities is conducted, demonstrating that this size is significantly lower than what would be appropriate based on population or the number of provinces. Additionally, a quantitative analysis of its effects reveals that the electoral system of Castilla-La Mancha exhibits low proportionality and representativeness, deviating from the norm observed in the rest of Spain. Furthermore, the article presents options to align the regional system with the others, thereby eliminating it as a source of political disputes, such as the contention over which provinces elect an even or odd number of deputies.
